TIS Kindness Week

kindness chain example.png

Today, we begin the TIS Week of Kindness! This was announced to students during the Spirit assemblies last Friday. During the week, classrooms will build kindness paper chains that we will then put together as one TIS paper chain on the 12th during an assembly. Acts of kindness are linked to the  IB Learner Profile trait of "Caring."

Each child should receive a paper chain loop if they demonstrate an act of kindness.  Students and staff will give the following colors to their classmates and students, and/or staff:

  • PreK and LowK: Red
  • Kindergarten: Orange
  • First Grade: Yellow
  • Second Grade: Green
  • Third Grade: Blue
  • Fourth Grade: Indigo
  • Fifth Grade: Hot Pnk
  • Specialists: White
  • Staff: Light Pink

We will be assembling one big chain at the end of this week. Perhaps we can have something look like the photo above. The goal is to have at least 2,000 acts of kindness!!!

Global Citizens Annual Fund: We did it!!!

Thank you for your support of the end-of-year $10,000 Global Citizens Annual Fund challenge.  We made our goal - and then some!  We raised $11,300, which means with our matching grandparent's $10,000 gift, a total of $21,300 was added to the 2017-18 Global Citizens Fund!  As of today, you have helped to raise $33,948.25 - well over halfway to our goal of $50,000 for the entire year!  Thank you!!  Contributions to the 2017-18 Global Citizens Annual Fund can be made at any time at www.intlschool.org/donatenow.

International Festival is Feb 9! Performance Schedule Coming Soon

DSC_0436 crop.jpeg

The International Festival is one of the great annual traditions at TIS! Each class performs a different song, skit, and/or dance in their track language. It’s a great way to showcase our multiculturalism and spirit of the school. TIS parents, grandparents, and other members of our community are invited to come watch the students perform. The shows are really fun!

This year's Festival will be held on Friday, February 9 at the PCC Sylvania Campus (same location as last year).

Watch your inboxes for the final International Festival performance schedule.  There will be four separate performances times across the day; each class will be assigned to one of these slots. Tips: Early Childhood students are always in the 8:30 show. Kindergarteners perform in the 10:30am show.

The full schedule will be released soon.  Stay tuned!

Parent Volunteers are needed! You would be assigned to a different show than your child(ren) would be performing in. For more information, contact kat@intlschool.org

Early Childhood Scholastic Book Fair

Our EC students love books! They are thrilled and delighted to pick books each week to check out to their classroom. This love of books (print motivation) plays a critical role in students learning to read. You can support your child's early literacy skills (and support the TIS library!) by purchasing books at our EC Book Fair to enjoy with your family at home. The book fair will be January 29 - February 2, open from 7:30-8:30am and 2:30-4:00pm. For each dollar you spend, the library receives points which we can then use to buy more books for the library!  It's a win win situation!

We are also looking for volunteers to help each day in the morning or afternoon. Please contact Lora Worden, TIS Librarian via e-mail at loraw@intlschool.org or sign up at the front desk in Stearns Hall.

ACT Interim Testing Next Week

Next week, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are taking interim ACT tests in order to get familiar with the testing interface and the types of questions. The ACT is a commonly used college readiness exam.  The ACT Aspire test is an elementary-based assessment model that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

At TIS, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students take online tests in Reading and Math only. Each grade will be tested for approximately 1.5-2 hours on both math and English. Exact schedules vary by grade.

Students then take the Summative test in the spring. As always, parents have the option to excuse their child from testing, or to test in only Math or Reading. If you have any questions, please reach out to Bodo Heiliger: bodoh@intlschool.org
